Dust Emission for Chemical Transport Model, GEOS-Chem
Dust emissions scale non-linearly with wind speed and emission initiates from a limited number of locations. Both of these issues lead to a resolution-dependence of the dust emissions (e.g. Ridley et al., 2013). Also, model resolution more strongly impacts dust emissions from weaker sources; therefore, the spatial and seasonal distribution of the emissions can change substantially as the resolution is changed. One way to alleviate this issue is to calculate the emissions offline using the native resolution GMAO meteorology and then read those emissions during run time. Currently, offline dust emissions are available for GEOS-Chem at native GEOS-FP (0.25° x 0.3125°) and MERRA2 (0.5° x 0.625°) meteorology fields resolution.
